First of all, let me say the the author seems like a very nice lady, who meant well. She is probably a lovely person.That said, I regret this purchase and wish that I had purchased a different book. At least 90% of it is dedicated to the basics of making soap, what materials are used, etc. What's worse, even this information is well, mediocre. It's not terrible, you probably won't get injured, but it's just very basic, bare bones soapmaking. There is nothing in this portion of the book that will make your soap stand out from the rapidly increasing crowd of soapers who are producing and selling great products. There is not even any good info on who to buy fragrance oils etc from! Some of the info on essential oils is erroneous- sweet orange is NOT lasting in cold process soap. There's nothing about where to find information on safe amounts of essential oils, instead, a standard amount is suggested, in mls....not ounces or grams.... For some essential oils, this is dangerous advice. The entire soapmaking portion of the book, which goes until page 139, is peppered with problems here and there. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as a beginning soapmaking book.The business portion of the book, from page 140-184, is OK, but honestly it isn't much better than if I had read it on Wiki-How. I'm certain that the author is, in fact highly successful in her soap business, and makes good soap. It's just that somehow, the most vital and engaging portion of her knowledge didn't make it into this book.
I found this book on the soap making business start- up, to be quite detailed and informative.It covered a lot of information on soap making from the different methods of soap making, to the ingredients & benefits of using specific elements, to making different soaps smells and colors.She gives great ideas on improvising the soap molds with everyday things in your home to save money.In addition, Carpenter gives great ideas and background on making your homemade soap into a lucrative business venture. She goes over packaging & labeling requirements, branding, pricing, marketing and sales.This book is a wonderful tool for advancing the beginning home soap maker, or advanced, into the world of selling their soaps for profit.So many great ideas and insights from Carpenter in general for starting a home business in soap making or really any home business idea.
I think this book does what it was meant to do: help teach you the basics about soap and business. If you don’t know how to make and get creative with soap, then you won’t make a successful business. The book has 140 pages on soap alone: making soap, different fats and fragrances, etc. it’s just about “mastering†soap making. THEN the book has 43 pages that actually talk about businness in a rather shallow way. The title of the book is misleading if you are looking to start a soap business, as less than 1/4 of the book actually talks about business and the rest of it is about soap making.What was also difficult is the read. There are a lot of grammar mistakes like crazy run on sentences and even completely missing words or articles in sentences. It makes for a slower read for sure, and got me rather frustrated, actually, since some of them were so noticeable that it became distracting. I’m not sure she ran this by an official editor before getting it published.Overall, I’m pretty disappointed in this. I was expecting a book that followed the title: a book about making a business from soap. Not a book about making soap itself. The title is misleading.
This is hands down the worst book that I have ever paid money for. I purchased this book to read as an assignment for a business class (and because I was genuinely interested) and somehow managed to read the entire thing, however after the first 10 or so pages I was so irritated with the author's poor writing abilities that I quit taking notes and just started highlighting spelling mistakes and taking notes of all the things that don't even form complete thoughts in this book. There was absolutely nothing that I learned from this book (which still shocks me) and more than a handful of things that are just flat out wrong.Also note: the title of this book is "How to Start, Run, and Grow a Million Dollar Success from Home!". However, 75% of this book covers how to make soap (ingredients, saftey...) in painfully useless and redundant detail. This is not a business book.There is not a single scrap of information in this book that you won't find in a 15 minute Google search. While I'm sure this author is probably experienced and successful in the soap making industry, she does not share anything of use here.
From someone who has a business degree and is very creative (me), this is an excellent book for a beginner soap maker. Regardless how far you go with your passion for soap making, this book makes sense. It's easy-to-read, concise, It gives the ' how to' from buying supplies to managing the financial aspect of having a business rather than a hobby. An intuitive and creative entrepreneur sometimes has that "automatic" marketing ability to grow the business - Suzanne has some great suggestions that make perfect, and, common sense to do just that, if you aren't afraid to put in a little time and footwork to get growing! Making the soap is fun and easy! Suzanne did a great job expressing that concept in her book. She was obviously a great success with her very own business - can't wait to see what she tackles next!
